There are so many myths being spread around the fitness world about weight loss it’s like being in high school all over again, so and so slept together, this person did this and so on. But I’m here to help dispel some of the major ones that seem to be going around. Here are my 4 myths that are busted!
1 – Spot Burning Fat.
I thought I’d start this one off with ‘spot burning fat’. The amount of times I have heard “If I do 100 sit ups a day my stomach fat will burn” is quiet upsetting. While yes doing that many sit ups is burning calories, it’s not enough to actually burn all that fat off. Also fat is burned as a fuel source, meaning it’s used from all over the body and not just the used area. So I’m sorry to say doing lots of arm exercises won’t burn all that arm fat, it’s much more beneficial to do full body exercises and cardio.
2 – Cardio Is More Important Than Strength (Weight) Training
Okay yes, I know Cardio is a huge aspect to burning fat as cardio mainly uses the aerobic fuel system in our body which will uses fat as a fuel source, and it burns a lot of calories while exercising, Strength training is hugely important as well. By building our muscle mass we are increasing our BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) meaning while cardio burns calories while exercising, strength training makes us burn more calories at rest and outside of exercise. So it’s about time to hop off that treadmill every now and then and do some weights.
Okay this may lead to some Ladies mostly saying “But Matt, I don’t want to get too big or bulky.” which leads to my next Myth
3 – Doing Strength Training Will Make Me Big and Bulky
I have been training for a while now and have friends that have been training for years and we have one thing to say, it’s very hard to actually get big and bulky, trust me, we have been trying. It takes a very strict diet and specific training styles such as hypertrophy (If you would like to know more, feel free to get in touch and I’ll be happy to help) If you want to get more technical, testosterone is a huge factor to gaining muscle mass, so ladies, you can lift those weights, you’ll be fine
4 – Eating Less Will Help Lose Weight
This is an exciting one. I am here to tell you to eat more! Yep you read that right. By eating more it encourages our Metabolism to constantly work to break down foods instead of storing it. Eating less encourages the body to go into a ‘starvation’ mode where it will store as much as it can so that the body won’t run out, making it very hard to burn that stored energy. This doesn’t mean go out and eat heaps of unhealthy food. If you eat the right food, then more is better. By right food, I mean a good meal of a lean meat protein such as steak or chicken and a carb, such as rice or sweet potato. Also including a nice green vegetable like broccoli. If you would like more information about what good amounts of food to be having look up Australian Healthy Eating Guidelines.
